Activity Guidelines for Brigham Young University Property On Y Mountain

University policies for campus activities outline some guidelines for activities for BYU property on Y mountain including the university owned parking lots, the Y trail, and the surface of the block Y on the mountain. The Y Trail parking lots are open from 4:00 A.M. – 10:00 P.M. daily, and secured by a gate when closed. The trail is normally open to foot traffic 24 hours a day.

Trail Safety

The trail is located just outside of Provo City on an exposed mountainside within a wilderness area. The trail is shaded in the early morning hours, and fully exposed to the sun during the day. Dress appropriately for the weather and bring plenty of water and snacks for your hike. Snow and ice are often present on the trail during winter months, and the surface may be slippery. Be on the lookout for wildlife in the area including rattlesnakes, deer, and mountain lions (aka cougars) and avoid coming into contact with wildlife whenever possible. Prohibited Activities

  • Alcohol, drugs, fireworks, fires, and weapons are not allowed on any University property
  • Using any part of the Y or Y trail for demonstrations of any kind is prohibited. See the BYU Demonstration Policy here.
